Our Purpose
Spend time with Mar Libre, a volunteer-based group, to clean the mangroves and reefs of Baja California.
Meet with an organization called Efecto Arena to help protect coral reefs through various reef restoration projects.
What to expect:
The turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez and the neighboring Pacific Ocean are home to an abundance of sea life that is unmatched in this part of the world. We’ll explore all of this by kayak, paddle board, surfboard and snorkel, but also take time to meet with two organizations working to protect this landscape and its unique wildlife.
Where you'll stay:
Start your trip at the charming 4-star Hotel Catedral in the seaside town of La Paz. A contemporary boutique hotel in the historic city center, you’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time as the church bells ring across the street. Take in the sites and sounds of the city from the roof deck, swim in the rooftop pool or simply relax by the hotel’s iconic cocktail bar.
We’ll then venture out by boat to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Isla Espiritu Santo. A marine park that covers 48,000 hectares will be your backyard as we spend two nights camping under the stars. Keep in mind this is not the camping you may be imagining. Our dome tents include comfortable mattresses, a chef that dreams up our meals and mixes drinks and a view that is unrivaled*
The last two nights will be spent in the vibrant coastal oasis of Todos Santos. Your home will be Los Colibris Casitas, a boutique hotel sitting in the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Each of the casas and casitas has magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, a freshwater estuary and a palm grove oasis to the front, and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains to the side and back.
Important notes:
Weather
There's always a possibility that poor (windy) weather conditions could inhibit the boat ride to Isla Espiritu or cause port closures which would prevent the camping experience on the island. If this is to occur, we will rearrange the week's activities to accommodate for weather.
Whale Shark Season
Whale shark season typically runs from October to April, with the peak months being from December to March. This is when the whale sharks are most commonly found in the area, as they migrate to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to feed on plankton.
The duration of the whale shark season can vary depending on environmental factors such as water temperature, plankton availability, and other ecological conditions. While local authorities typically give advance notice of any changes that might lead to a season closure—such as a drop in whale shark sightings or adjustments to the season's length—there have been occasional emergency closures in recent years, sometimes as early as February, due to low whale shark numbers. While these closures are rare, they are possible. In such cases, Discover Corps will make every effort to adapt and provide an alternative experience to ensure your trip is a success.
