Here is some important information that you need to know about traveling on the Victoria Falls extension.
Zimbabwe Visa/Passport info
A visa is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Zimbabwe. Passengers are now required to complete arrival forms online before arrival as paper forms are no longer in use. While ipads are provided at immigration in Zimbabwe, completing the form on arrival may result in delays.
A passport, return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds to cover the trip are also required.
Zimbabwe requires 2 consecutive blank pages in your passport to enter (more information here). This is in addition to the 2 pages needed for South Africa for a total of 4 blank pages.
Tourist visas are valid for either 30 days, permitting a single entry, or for 60 days, permitting multiple entries.
To ensure a smoother and quicker journey through immigration, we recommend completing your form in advance here.
Money
Zimbabwe used to be a cash society and the use of credit cards is more widely accepted now. They accept US Dollars and Zimbabwean Dollars. If you use cash, it needs to be in one of these currencies, preferably small bills such as $1 and $5. All travelers are encouraged to complete a Customs Declaration Form (Form 47) and declare the currency in their possession at the time of entry. You will not be able to exit the country with more than $2,000 USD unless declared on a customs form.
We recommend bringing small bills for tipping throughout the extension. We estimate around $100 USD for tipping for the entire extension.
Health
Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Malaria vaccinations are recommended by the CDC when visiting Zimbabwe. Please see the CDC website here.
Malaria is present in all parts of Zimbabwe including Victoria Falls. Please consult your doctor or travel health clinic for further information.
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers coming from areas of yellow fever transmission
Flight Information - The extension includes an overnight in Johannesburg due to limited flight times. Please see detailed flight information here.
This extension is mostly unguided. You will have a guide on Day 3 for your Victoria Falls tour. Day 4 will be a free day that you may schedule as you wish. There are many activities in the area that you can schedule through local tour providers.
There are many hawkers and people selling things in the streets around Victoria Falls and large hotels like Lokuthula Lodges. They do not present a danger but it's best to ignore the hawkers and keep in mind that it is not rude to say "no thank you" and kindly walk on.
The popular Devils Pool is generally only open during "low water season" from August to December. The first half of the year, the water levels are too high, making entering the pools too dangerous.
The Safari Club, Johannesburg Night 1 (This is necessary as there are limited flights to Victoria Falls)
Lokuthula Lodge, Victoria Falls Nights 2-4
