Is This Trip Right for You?
At Discover Corps, we want our travelers to be fully prepared and choose the trip that will offer the best experience while accommodating all physical abilities. Please read the points below carefully to determine if this trip is the right fit for you.
Physical Demands:
The town of Paro sits at an elevation of around 7,300 feet (2,200 meters), and some destinations within the region, such as the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery, are located at even higher elevations. To minimize the risk of altitude sickness, it's important to stay hydrated, take things slow, and allow your body time to acclimate to the altitude.
The hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) is a physically demanding trek and may be challenging for those who aren't used to vigorous activity or prolonged exertion. The trail involves a steady ascent, with some sections being steep and rocky, making it quite taxing for some visitors. While the trek offers stunning views and a rewarding experience upon reaching the monastery, it is optional and can be skipped if you prefer a more leisurely visit to the area.
Weather and Terrain:
The weather in Bhutan can be unpredictable, with sudden temperature drops and snowfall, especially in higher altitudes. Some roads can also be bumpy and winding, which may cause motion sickness during long drives. Additionally, ongoing road construction in some areas may create dust along the routes.
Accommodation and Amenities:
Lodging in rural areas may be basic with limited amenities compared to urban or luxury accommodations. Public restroom facilities in remote areas may include squat toilets or basic options, it's always helpful to travel with a pack of Kleenex and handwipes.
Cultural Considerations:
In Bhutan, it's customary to remove shoes before entering temples and to wear modest clothing as a sign of respect. When visiting religious sites, you may be asked to sit for extended periods, maintain silence, and follow specific rules to preserve the sanctity of the space. These practices help to create a respectful and peaceful atmosphere for both visitors and locals.
Food and Dietary Restrictions:
In the larger cities of Paro and Thimphu, we can accommodate most dietary needs. However, in smaller villages, vegan options may be limited. Additionally, dishes like "Ema Datshi" (chili cheese) can be quite intense for some travelers.
Other Considerations:
Wifi connectivity can be unreliable, particularly in remote areas. Additionally, insects encountered during forest hikes or wildlife encounters may cause discomfort for some travelers. Please pack accordingly!
