Please note: The weather of Chengdu is mild and humid all year round. This area is known for having a foggy and humid climate. In comparison to Chengdu, Beijing is more temperate and has a continental monsoon climate. The summers in Beijing are hot and humid in contrast to the short and cool weather in the spring and autumn. Be prepared for the various changes in weather depending on what time of the year you go.


Summer Packing List:

Must - Haves:

  • Passport. Must be valid for up to 6 months after your scheduled departure date from China
  • Visa
  • Personal medication. Note: It is best to be packed in your carry-on luggage, not in your checked luggage. Also, this medication should be in its original container. If this is not feasible, a copy of the prescription should be carried along with the medication.
  • Mosquito repellent
  • One refillable water bottle


Clothing:

  • A couple of short-sleeved shirts (we recommend thin, breathable shirts as it can be very hot and humid)
  • A warm sweatshirt / fleece (it can get cool at night)
  • Rain coat (light weight, water resistant)
  • Gym / sportswear
  • Under garments, socks
  • Shorts
  • A light pair of long pants
  • Hat
  • One pair of flip flops / sandals / water shoes
  • One pair of tennis shoes (that can get dirty)


Bath / Personal:

  • Personal medication
  • Prescription sea sickness pills or patch, if applicable
  • Glasses / contacts / contact solution
  • Personal toiletries (shampoo, deodorant, etc.)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray


Other:

  • Books and/or magazines
  • Watch or small alarm clock
  • Light day bag or pack (small backpack would be ideal)
  • Sunglasses, particularly if you’re sensitive to sunlight
  • Personal snacks that you may need or crave (such as granola bars or power bars).
  • Portable charger

Winter Packing List:

Must - Haves:

  • Warm sweatshirts & fleece
  • Gym / sportswear for service (can wear under warmer clothes)
  • Under garments, socks
  • Long pants/jeans
  • Warm winter hat
  • Warm gloves
  • One pair of tennis shoes/comfortable shoes to walk in

Please note: There is no special footwear required for volunteering with the Pandas as long as they are comfortable to work in. Also, bring clothes that you do not mind getting dirty in.

*We advise that you should bring enough lightweight clothes to avoid having to do laundry during the trip.

*Electrical outlets in China are the same as in the United States. China operates on a 220 voltage supply and 50Hz therefore it is important to us a converter, in order to use your electronics safely, and an adaptor, to cater to different types of plugs. We recommend buying an universal travel adaptor for your convenience.
